Cookies
This site sets none
No cookies, no local storage, no fingerprinting, no advertising or tracking pixels, and nothing that follows you to other sites. That is why there is no cookie banner: there is nothing to ask you to consent to.
What we do measure
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is cookie-free and does not build a profile of you or track you across sites. It tells us how many people viewed a page, roughly where in the world they were, and which page they came from. It is counting, not watching, and we cannot identify you from it.
It deliberately does not record query strings, so anything after a
? in a link is invisible to us as well as to you.
Our host, Cloudflare, also processes your IP address for the few moments it takes to deliver the page and to protect the site from attack, as any web host must. We do not have access to those logs as a list of visitors and we do not store them ourselves.
Links that leave this site
We link out constantly — to the RHS, Gardeners’ World, Garden Organic and others for sources, to Instagram and YouTube for the videos, and to retailers including Amazon for kit.
Some retailer links are affiliate links: if you buy through one we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. Clicking one takes you to that retailer, who will set their own cookies and handle your data under their own privacy policy, not this one. What comes back to us is a commission report with totals in it — never your name, your address or what you personally bought.
Once you follow any link off this site you are on someone else’s site, under their terms. We have no control over what they collect.
What we never do
- Sell, rent or share your data. There is nothing to sell.
- Run advertising networks or retargeting.
- Ask you to create an account or hand over an email address.
- Use the analytics to identify an individual visitor.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to ask what personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object to how it is used. In practice we hold none, because we collect none — but if you write to admin@spectacledbear.ai we will tell you that honestly and in writing.
Our lawful basis for the aggregate analytics above is legitimate interests: knowing whether anyone read a page, balanced against a measurement method chosen specifically because it cannot identify you.
If you think we have handled your data badly, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK regulator. We would rather you told us first so we can fix it.
